Four MIL wrestlers earn No. 1 seeds

Four wrestlers from the Maui Interscholastic League – two boys and two girls – received No. 1 seeds in the Chevron State Championships brackets announced Sunday.

Two of the top seeds are from Lahainaluna – Bubba Jaramillo at 140 pounds in the boys competition, and Precious Jaramillo at 121 in the girls division. The Lunas won the MIL team titles on Saturday, the eighth in a row for the Lahainaluna boys, and fourth straight for the girls.

Baldwin’s Danny Welds-Ebanks received the top seed in the boys 189 class, and Molokai’s Rizpah Torres-Umi is the top-seeded girl at 125.

Lahainaluna has three No. 2 seeds – Hercules Mataafa (215) in the boys competition, and Tekau Taamu (140) and Lalelei Mataafa (220) in the girls. Also seeded second were Molokai girls teammates Kailaoe Cabating (105) and Desiree Corpuz (113), and Andrew Kahalewai of Kamehameha Maui in the boys 152 class.

The state tournament is scheduled for Friday and Saturday at the Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu.
