Spartans take regular-season championship

Seabury Hall sewed up the Maui Interscholastic League Division II regular-season boys basketball title with a 49-46 victory over Molokai on Friday night at “The Barn” in Hoolehua.

“That was a big relief and we can start focusing on the tournament and go from there,” said Seabury coach Louis Turbeville. “We can work on a few things (today), it takes the pressure off a little bit.”

Michael Clarion led the Spartans (10-1) with 20 points.

Oli Falealii scored 26 points for the Farmers (7-4), while Paka Adolpho had 13.

“It was kind of a back-and-forth game, we got up, they got up,” Turbeville said. “It was an exciting game. They have a big crowd supporting them and they got into it. It was a good pressure situation for us to play in. We got balanced scoring and we had some great defense by some of our role players.”

Clarion was playing in his fourth game since returning from a broken finger.

“It was nice to have him back in the mix,” Turbeville said.

“He is finally getting into the flow of things.”

The Spartans and Farmers will meet again today, the last day of the MIL regular season. The D-II league tournament begins Thursday.

If a team other than the Spartans wins the league tournament, it would face Seabury on Saturday for the MIL’s lone D-II state berth.

Turbeville knows at least one more meeting with the Farmers is a possibility.

“They are a good team, they are tough, they are athletic, they play smart,” he said. “Every game we have played them so far has been close. Even though we have the regular-season title sewed up they are not going to go down without a fight, so it should be a real good tournament.”
