Baldwin edges Lahainaluna water polo
Jazmine Harmon had five goals and Alea Weber added four as the Baldwin High School water polo team beat Lahainaluna 14-12 in a Maui Interscholastic League match on Wednesday at the Kihei Aquatic Center.
The Bears (3-0) took a one-game lead over the Lunas (2-1) in the standings.
Deme DeShayne added three goals for Baldwin, which scored seven times in the second period for a 10-7 lead.
“We had some very good play in that quarter and were able to made adjustments to what they were doing,” said Baldwin coach Stan Zitnik.”
Lahainaluna’s Lalelei Mata-afa scored eight goals and Courtney Galarita scored two.
The Lunas made things interesting by outscoring the Bears 4-1 in the fourth period.
The teams will meet again next week.
“They will come back stronger, but so are we,” Weber said. “We’ll train as hard as we can to keep improving. Because we only beat them by two points they will come back and play a good game.”
Mooers finished with 14 saves for Baldwin, which has won 13 straight MIL matches.
“That have one really strong shooter, who could shoot from anywhere,” she said. “It was painful to block the ball.”
At the end of the first half, Mooers pulled off a rare feat by scoring.
“I got the counter ball with four seconds left and could have held onto it or let the clock run out,” Mooers said. “I lobbed a shot over (the opposing goalie’s) head and scored.”
