Baldwin remains unbeaten

The Baldwin High School boys golf team remained undefeated and dealt Lahainaluna its first loss of the season on Wednesday, moving one victory from a Maui Interscholastic League championship with a 148-158 win at Kahili Golf Course in Wailuku.

Tyler Munetake had a 35 for the Bears (9-0), Jameson Keiley shot 36 and Ariel Hanson recorded a 38.

Malu Rosenthal of Lahainaluna (8-1) posted the low score of the match, a 34.

Baldwin’s Nathaniel Idica had a 43, and Brendan Molina a 49.

“We had been shooting good in practice, and I was hoping it would carry over,” Bears coach Buff Burton said.

The teams will meet again in Kaanapali on Friday, the last day of the regular season. A win by the Lunas would force a playoff for the league title.

“We get to play at our home course, so we’ve got to play well,” Rosenthal said.

Rhett Wiseman and Lucas Bell each shot 41 for Lahainaluna, and Jake Horton had a round of 42. Tristan Villa had a 43, and Kerek Franz carded a 44.

The Bears matched the best team score in the league this season – the Lunas carded a 148 in a win over Maui High on March 7.

“It was just some really strong play from Baldwin,” said Lahainaluna coach Sutee Nitakorn. “They definitely stepped up.”

The Bears were last year’s MIL runner-up, after Kamehameha Maui won a playoff.

“That helps a lot – the experience last year, what happened last year,” Burton said. “I don’t think they want to have that happen again.”
