Hawaii men one-and-done at tournament
The University of Hawaii men’s basketball team was eliminated from the Big West tournament after losing to well-balanced UC Irvine 71-60 in a quarterfinal game Thursday in Anaheim,?Calif.
Will Davis scored 13 points to lead six Anteaters in double-figures. Michael Wilder added 12, Travis Souza had 11 and Alex Young, Chris McNealy and Daman Starring each contributed 10, for fourth-seeded UC Irvine (19-14), which led 44-22 at halftime.
“I really thought that UCI did a great job of jumping out early on us, bringing some intensity this time of year, giving them credit, sharing the ball around,” said Hawaii coach Gib Arnold. “Looking at their stat sheet, there wasn’t one guy who really stood out, to try to key (on) and slow down.”
Hauns Brereton and Vander Joaquim both scored 18 for Hawaii (17-14). The ‘Bows were just 9-of-34 in the first half.
Brereton had nine rebounds and Jace Tavita had six assists.
“We had great support, unfortunately, we didn’t win,”?Joaquim said. “Great to see everybody out there cheering for us.”
