Payne into third round at Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast

Dusty Payne of Lahaina won his heat at the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast by a hundredth of a point on Saturday, advancing to the third round of the opening event of this year’s Association of Surfing Professionals world tour at Australia’s Snapper Rocks.

Payne defeated Australia’s Owen Wright 14.44-14.43, and will next face 11-time world champion Kelly Slater.

Today, the ASP announced that Oahu’s John John Florence, ranked No. 4 in the world, withdrew, citing an ankle injury.
