Dumaran finishes sixth at state judo

Kawehilani Dumaran of Baldwin High School was the lone Maui Interscholastic League competitor to place in the state judo championships on Saturday at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu, finishing sixth in the girls 172-pound division.

Dumaran received a first-round bye, then defeated Aiea’s Sarah Miner by ippon in the quarterfinal round. In the semifinals, Iolani’s Alex Fautanu beat Dumaran by ippon. Dumaran then lost by ippon to Kamehameha Hawaii’s Kailey Lapenia in the third-place quarterfinals, and by ippon to Taylor Allen of Campbell in the fifth-place match.

Baldwin earned three points in the team scoring, tying with University for 24th place. Pearl City won with 72 points despite having no individual champions. Kamehameha Kapalama was second with 56 points, and had winners in three weight classes – Bree Rapoza at 122, Teshaya Alo at 129 and Jaclyn Fontanilla at 154.

Kamehameha Kapalama took the boys team crown with 66 points, led by a title at 220 for Dane Pestano.
