Hilo advances with shutout of Kailua
Kian Kurokawa pitched a six-hitter and Jodd Carter went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs as fourth-seeded Hilo beat Kailua 3-0 on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Wally Yonamine Foundation Division I State Baseball Championship at Maehara Stadium in Wailuku.
Drew Kell was 2-for-3 with a double for the Vikings (9-3), who will play Mililani in the semifinal round today.
Bryce Ah Sam and Keola Himan combined on a six-hitter for the Surfriders (11-8), who will play top-seeded Baldwin in the fifth-place semifinals.
* Mid-Pacific 5, Waiakea 1: Trey Saito pitched a three-hitter and Isaiah Kiner-Falefa batted 4-for-4 with three runs as second-seeded Mid-Pacific (11-2) advanced to a semifinal meeting with third-seeded Campbell today.
Quinton Collier also went 4-for-4 for the Owls. Daniel Fentriss drove in two runs.
Waiakea, last year’s state champion, dropped to 9-4, and will play Maui High today with a berth in the fifth-place game at stake.
* Iolani 3, Waipahu 0: Austin Jimon, Joshua Inouye and Corey Nakakura combined on a one-hitter for Iolani (6-8) in a consolation game.
The Raiders’ Tanner Nishioka was 2-for-3 with a double.
Iolani will play in the consolation final on Saturday against Pearl City or Leilehua, who meet today.
Waipahu finishes 9-8.
