Kamehameha doubles team reaches state tournament quarterfinal round
Sarah Ikioka and Kylee Kato of Kamehameha Schools Maui won two matches Thursday in the Carlsmith Ball State Tennis Championships, and gave the Maui Interscholastic League its only representative in the third round of the event at the Fairmont Orchid Hawaii Tennis Center and Mauna Lani Bay Hotel Fitness Club on the Big Island.
Ikioka and Kato, the sixth-seeded team in girls doubles, defeated Konawaena’s Kira Ekstrom and Nikki Kunitomo 6-0, 6-0 in the first round, and won 6-3, 6-3 over Lahainaluna’s Chantelle Baclay and Melissa Taketa in the second round.
Ikioka and Kato will face fourth-seeded Kylie Kam and Taylor Wardweli of Punahou in the quarterfinals today.
Kamehameha’s Kelcey Lorenzo and Brandi Silva and Baldwin’s Tayler Duarte and Jessica Pressman lost in the second round.
Devan Kepler of Maui High lost in the second round of boys singles, and the Baldwin boys doubles team of Ethan Gazmen and Will Summers bowed out after one win as well.
Eliminated in the first round were boys singles players Jordan Baclay of Lahainaluna, Joey Baldwin of Maui High, Bud Kaiwi of Baldwin and Devonte Llanes of Kamehameha Maui; girls singles players Michaela Thompson of King Kekaulike, Jourdan Duarte of Baldwin, Shanise Ka’aikala of Kamehameha Maui, Brittany Nervesa of Molokai, Alicia Ballesteros of St. Anthony and Joanna Aceret of Lahainaluna; boys doubles teams Pono Chow and Kamanu Pascual of Molokai, Logan Birch and Aaron Monoogan, and Dillon Koga and Ray Tengan, of King Kekaulike and Max Linder and Jarret Pascual of Lahainaluna; and girls doubles teams Jade and Jayna Thurman of Baldwin and Nicole Aceret and Ezra Baccar of Lahainaluna.
