Kozaki wins gold with record vault

Amber Kozaki of Baldwin High School set an Island Movers State Track and Field Championships record on Friday by clearing 13 feet to win the girls pole vault title at Mililani on Oahu.

Kozaki, a senior headed to the University of Hawaii, broke the mark of 12-6 set by Baldwin graduate Kristine Felix in 2011.

Kozaki cleared the height on her first attempt.

“Yes, I was relieved,” she said. “The competition (Punahou’s Sammy Morimoto) cleared 12-6, so I thought, ‘I have to clear 13 now.’ “

Maui High’s Vincent Keomoungkoune finished second in the boys high jump final with a height of 6-2.

The other event finals are scheduled for today.

Kozaki had cleared 13 feet in the Maui Interscholastic League championship meet two weeks ago.

“I came in with no expectations,” Kozaki said. “I was hoping to do good. It felt really good to clear 13 again. It tells me the 13 I cleared at MILs, I could do it again.”

Bears girls coach Keoni Tengan said: “She wanted to try and do it at the state meet, make it an official record. The conditions were perfect today, the wind was at her back.”

Kozaki also qualified for today’s long jump final with a distance of 16 feet, 4 inches.
