Sabers set up all-MIL game for fifth place

WAILUKU – It is two games before they dreamed of playing, but the Maui High School baseball team and crosstown rival Baldwin have earned a sixth meeting.

After a 3-1 victory over Waiakea on Friday at Maehara Stadium, the Sabers will meet the Bears today for fifth place in the Wally Yonamine Foundation Division I State Championship.

Maui High senior T.J. Molina started on the mound for the first time this season and finished a six-hitter with three strikeouts and no walks to set up one more game between the Maui Interscholastic League foes – Baldwin leads this year’s series 3-2.

“I felt good – coach asked me to start as a senior, so I got the start today,” said Molina, who will play at Laney Junior College in Oakland, Calif., next year.

Maui High (13-5) tied the game in the top of the third inning when Mark Karaviotis singled to lead off, stole second, was balked to third and scored on Kody Medeiros’ two-out single.

In the fifth, the Sabers’ Callen Beeson singled and later scored on a balk, and Micah Isagawa was driven in by Chazz Ishikawa’s single.

Medeiros finished 2-for-3.

Maui High got the last out of the sixth at the plate. With Andrew Filoteo III on first base, Aaron Nishiura doubled, but Medeiros took left fielder Callen Beeson’s throw and fired a strike to home, where Jaylan Suda made the tag just before Filoteo’s foot touched the plate.

Kodi Medeiros had two hits and scored Waiakea’s run. The Warriors, last year’s state champions, finish this season 9-5.

“We just didn’t make enough adjustments throughout the game and that is a credit to their coaching staff,” said Waiakea coach Kevin Yee.
