Victorino expected to be in Red Sox lineup today
Shane Victorino is expected to play for the Boston Red Sox today, the team reported on its website Thursday. Victorino, the only Maui-born All-Star in major league history, has missed seven straight games because of a stiff lower back.
Boston begins a three-game road series with the Texas Rangers today in a matchup of American League division leaders.
Victorino took batting practice on Thursday, the first time the right fielder did so since coming out of a game against the Oakland Athletics on April 24 after being hurt on a checked swing.
“It’s not fun to sit here every night having to watch. I’m getting antsy,” the three-time Gold Glove winner was quoted as saying on redsox.com.
The team reported that an MRI examination revealed inflammation in Victorino’s lower back.
The 32-year-old Victorino, who signed a three-year, $39 million contract with the Red Sox as a free agent in the offseason, is batting .292 in 19 games this year. He has played at least 131 games every season since 2006, his third in the major leagues.
