DeVault, Daly still in hunt at junior worlds

Imaikalani DeVault of Ma-kawao reached the fifth round in the boys 16 division of the International Surfing Association World Junior Championships on Thursday at Jiqui-liste Beach in Nicaragua, while Team Hawaii’s other Maui member, Kain Daly of Kuau, finished third in his boys 18 fourth-round heat, but remained in the repercharge bracket.

DeVault placed second in his fourth-round heat with a score of 10.10, behind South Africa’s Jordy Maree (12.60). In the fifth round, DeVault is to be grouped with Italy’s Leo-nardo Fioravanti, Australia’s Chris Zaffis and Germany’s Leon Glatzer. Top-two finishes in that heat and in the next round would clinch a spot in the final without going through any repercharge rounds.

Daly had a score of 9.00 in his fourth-round heat. Teammate Koa Smith of Kauai won the heat with a 14.50, and Costa Rica’s Noe Mar McGonagle (12.50) was second. Daly will face Team Hawaii’s Josh Moniz of Oahu, and two Japanese surfers – Naomi Kobayashi and Hiroto Arai – in the sixth repercharge round.
