DeVault sent into repercharge at World Junior Championships
Imaikalani DeVault of Makawao was sent to the boys 16 repercharge on Friday in the International Surfing Association’s World Junior Championships, but remained in contention, while Kuau’s Kain Daly, the other Team Hawaii member from Maui, was eliminated from the boys 18 competition at Jiquiliste Beach in Nicaragua.
DeVault finished third in the fifth-round heat with a score of 12.80, behind Germany’s Leon Glatzer (16.06) and Italy’s Leonardo Fioravanti (15.20), and was sent to a heat with South Africa’s Jordy Maree, Japan’s Reo Inaba and Australia’s Kai Hing. DeVault would have to get through three repercharge heats to reach the final.
Daly finished third in a repercharge heat with a 10.27. Josh Moniz of Kauai was first with a 14.90, and Japan’s Hiroto Arai was second with a 10.93.
Hawaii remained atop the team standings with 33,520 points – 180 more than second-place Australia.
