Kahana paddler dies during race
A 50-year-old Lahaina man was pronounced dead after he became unconscious while paddling in a canoe regatta Saturday afternoon at Hanaka’o’o (Canoe) Beach Park, police said.
The man was identified as Alan Akana.
Police were called to the beach at 4:56 p.m. Akana was competing for Kahana Canoe Club during the Keiki O Maui Regatta, the first event of the Maui County Hawaiian Canoe Association season, when he became unconscious and was brought to shore by an escort boat, said Lt. William Gannon of the Lahaina Patrol District. Gannon said attempts by medics to revive Akana were futile. He was pronounced dead at Maui Memorial Medical Center at 7 p.m.
There are no indications of foul play or suspicious circumstances, Gannon said.
The MCHCA season continues Saturday with the John M. & Kealoha Lake Regatta. Association officials said plans to memorialize Akana had not been set.
