Karaviotis, Arriaga opt not to sign

Baldwin High School graduate Akoni Arriaga and Maui High graduate Mark Karaviotis did not sign with the major league organizations that drafted them last month and will attend college.

The deadline for draft picks to sign passed Friday. The draft was held June 6-8.

Arriaga, a shortstop and pitcher, was picked by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 35th round, 1,045th overall. The Maui Interscholastic League second-team All-Star has had pitches clocked past 90 mph.

Arriaga said he planned to attend Yavapai (Ariz.) Junior College if he didn’t sign.

Karaviotis, a two-time MIL first-team pick at shortstop for the Sabers, was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 39th round, 1,170th overall.

Karaviotis has accepted a scholarship to the University of Oregon.

Arriaga and Karaviotis were the only players from Maui County selected in the draft.
