Nelson takes title at Aloha Section event

Kirk Nelson of Kihei won the Aloha Section Senior PGA Professional Championship that took place Thursday and Friday at Poipu Bay Golf Course on Kauai.

Nelson closed with an even-par 72 for a 2-under total of 142 to win by eight shots, earning $1,800 and one of three berths to the Southworth Senior PGA Professional National Championship, scheduled for Oct. 10-13 at The Club at Creighton Farms and the River Creek Club in Virginia.

“I missed 14 birdie putts in the last round, and I was never so happy to miss 14 birdie putts,” said Nelson, an Elleair Maui Golf Club professional.

“Usually, I’m trying to make all those birdies to try to catch somebody.”

Brad Bowen (72) of Haiku and Andrew Feldmann of Honolulu (77) tied for second.

Nelson competed in last month’s U.S. Senior Open in Nebraska, missing the cut.

“Based on my last big tournament on the Mainland, I’m going to treat (the Virginia event) as a qualifier, because I still have a cut to make,” Nelson said. “It seems like I do the qualifiers OK, but I can’t settle for just being here. I’m really going to work.”
