Grossman, Kaikkonen race to victories

Dakota Grossman led a 1-2 finish for Seabury Hall runners in girls competition at Saturday’s Maui Interscholastic League cross country race in Hana, and Lahainaluna boys runners claimed the top three places, with Corban Kaikkonen earning the win.

The Spartans took the girls team title, and the Lunas topped the boys team competition.

Grossman, winner of the last three state championships and coming off a victory in the Iolani Invitational, had a time of 19 minutes, 16.34 seconds – she has won all three MIL races she has entered this year. Ally Smith was the runner-up in 20:13.38.

Briana Yamamoto, who won the previous week’s MIL race, was third on Saturday in 20:45.56.

Kaikkonen claimed his third MIL victory of the year, in 17:01.22. Willem Thorbecke, winner of the season’s other two MIL races, had a second-place time of 17:05.25, and Wyatt Chism was third in 18:04.00.

The Lahainaluna boys finished with 33 points. Maui High was second with 79.

The Seabury girls totaled 21 points, 33 better than second-place Maui High.
