Lahainaluna takes early control in D-II race

WAILUKU – Turnovers and penalties didn’t seem to matter – the Lahainaluna High School football team dominated Saturday night in what is becoming typical fashion this season.

Allowing just two rushing yards, the Lunas began their Maui Interscholastic League schedule by defeating Kamehameha Maui 42-7 at War Memorial Stadium.

Lahainaluna committed seven penalties for 65 yards and had four turnovers, but made up for its mistakes with 490 yards of total offense while permitting just 108.

“We were actually a little sloppy with ball security, so we’ve got to clean that up,” said Lunas co-coach Garret Tihada. “But our kids played hard and they did their best. That’s all we can ask from them.”

Including nonleague play, Lahainaluna has outscored its opponents 98-20 this season.

Christian Whitehead ran for 152 yards and two touchdowns for Lahainaluna, while Jared Rocha-Isalas added two scores of his own. Makoa Filikitonga passed for 128 yards and ran for 44 yards and a touchdown. Taylor Kohler-Fonohema ran for 87 yards and a score.

Chase Newton threw for 106 yards for the Warriors (1-1), with a touchdown pass to Chase Alexander.

The Lunas went on a 15-play drive to open the game, capped by a 1-yard touchdown dive by Whitehead.

After a three-and-out possession by the Warriors, the Lunas took over at their own 23-yard line, but lost a fumble, with William Nipp recovering, which set up the touchdown pass to Alexander.

The first quarter ended with the teams tied, but a 3-yard touchdown by Rocha-Isalas started a 28-0 outburst for the Lunas in the second.

Whitehead capped the scoring with an 80-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
