Molokai deals Hana first loss of season
The Molokai High School girls volleyball team became the first Maui Interscholastic League squad to defeat Hana this season, earning a 26-19, 19-25, 25-20, 26-24 win Saturday at “The Barn” in Hoolehua.
“Basically, our defense was much better,” said Farmers coach Mahealani Rawlins, whose team was swept by the Dragons on Friday.
Molokai improved to 6-2.
Hana (6-1) fell a half-game behind Seabury Hall, the MIL’s lone remaining unbeaten team, in the Division II standings.
“We don’t pay attention to anybody else’s records,” Rawlins said. “There’s a lot of work left for us to do as a team, and hopefully we’ll do that, and we’ll be good to go against Seabury.”
The Farmers are not scheduled to play again until their Oct. 11 match with the Spartans at Erdman Athletic Center. Molokai lost to Seabury in four sets on the Friendly Isle on Sept. 14.
Taylor Keliihoomalu had 12 kills for the Farmers on Saturday.
“She’s kind of our silent leader, one of the captains,” Rawlins said. “The difference was that she was able to play smart and put down some balls and get some kills.”
The Dragons had won nine consecutive MIL regular-season matches, dating to last season.
“Hana’s always well-rounded as a team,” Rawlins said. “They go for balls, they always do their best.”
