Schweitzer places third in Battle distance race

Zane Schweitzer of Lahaina finished third in the Battle of the Paddle elite-division stand-up long-distance race Sunday in Dana Point, Calif., and three other Maui competitors finished in the top 12.

Schweitzer had a time of 1 hour, 37 minutes, 27 seconds on the approximately 9.5-mile course from Doheny State Beach to San Cle-mente Pier and back.

Australia’s Travis Grant won in 1:37:19, and California’s Danny Ching was second in 1:37:24.

Haiku’s Kody Kerbox (1:37:47) was eighth. Lahaina’s Slater Trout had a time of 1:38:00 to finish 11th, one second and one spot in front of Spreckelsville’s Kai Lenny.

Lenny and Kerbox teamed with the Big Island’s Jenny Kalmbach and Denmark’s Casper Steinfath on Naish Team A and won the elite relay race.

Lenny won the elite sprint race on Saturday.
