Seabury Hall keeps rolling
WAILUKU – Seabury Hall’s dominance of Maui Interscholastic League eight-player football grew to new heights Thursday night.
The Spartans defeated Molokai 42-15 in front of about 1,000 fans at War Memorial Stadium.
After two close wins over the Farmers last season, Seabury Hall is now 9-0 all-time in MIL play, including 3-0 this season.
“Great team effort, it took everybody and nobody quit,” said Spartans coach Andrew Burger.
Seabury and Molokai (1-1) will meet again in three weeks on the Friendly Isle.
“They’re physical, they are going to come back, make their adjustments,” Burger said. “That’s a tough trip, that’s a good team. We will see them again and it will be a different story on that island, for sure.”
The Spartans got three touchdown runs and a pair of touchdown passes from junior quarterback Jaxson Stinger, who finished with 162 rushing yards on 15 carries. He was 4-for-15 passing for 92 yards with two interceptions.
“They didn’t have a nose guard, so it opened a lot in the middle,” said Stinger, whose 69-yard run up the middle made the score 35-0. “I looked up the field and everyone was covered, so I was, like, ‘OK, I’ll just take it.’ Our linemen knew it and laid some great blocks.”
Seabury led 42-0 at halftime after exploding for five touchdowns in the second quarter.
Stinger’s backfield mate, Cayde Omura, had 148 rushing yards, including a 73-yard run that made it 14-0. He also caught a 19-yard scoring pass from Stinger.
“Those are two special players,” Burger said of Stinger and Omura.
Molokai coach Mike Kahale said: “Those two are their bread and butter.”
After allowing one first down on the Farmers’ initial possession, the Spartans needed just four plays to take a 7-0 lead on a 15-yard touchdown pass to Rip Pahukoa.
Molokai’s Kayson Castor-Wallace intercepted a tipped ball and returned it 28 yards to the Seabury 16-yard line, but the Farmers were stopped on downs at the 9.
The Spartans then proceeded to go 91 yards in four plays, the last 73 on Omura’s run – a burst to the right and down the sideline.
Stinger capped a 66-yard drive the next time Seabury had the ball with a 4-yard scoring run. Molokai committed two 15-yard penalties on the drive.
Seabury Hall made it 28-0 on a 35-yard drive that was all Omura – he had two runs totaling 16 yards, then caught a swing pass from Stinger and took it 19 yards to the end zone.
The next time Seabury touched the ball, Stinger delivered his long run “It was key for us to get upfield and block to open up Cayde and the running,” Stinger said. “They are a great team, so I’m surprised.”
Carter Christie intercepted a David Rapanot pass on the next drive, giving the Spartans the ball at their own 24 with less than two minutes left in the half. They went 76 yards in seven plays – a 36-yard pass to Keanu Catugal moved the ball to the 1, and Stinger dove across the goal line two plays later.
Seabury gained 374 yards in the first half, and finished with 391. Molokai totaled 216 – 104 through the air by Rapanot. Noah Caparida had 84 rushing yards on 15 carries.
The Farmers scored with 7:27 left in the third quarter on a 1-yard run up the middle by Rapanot. They took over on the Spartans’ 17 after an interception by Maka Puaa-Aki.
Molokai scored again with 42 seconds to play on a 1-yard plunge by Caparida after a 47-yard strike from Rapanot to Alika Kaahanui.
“The first half of the first quarter and the whole second quarter, they just killed us in the middle,” Kahale said. “We just couldn’t make the adjustments quick enough, our defense was on the field a little too long, and we just gave up some big plays.
“I’m proud of the boys and how they bounced back and we have got another one with them at home.”
