UH sweeps UCLA for tourney title

Emily Hartong had 15 kills and Mita Uiato had 33 assists as the University of Hawaii women’s volleyball team swept UCLA on Saturday to capture the Hawaiian Airlines Classic title at the Stan Sheriff?Center in Honolulu.

The scores were 25-18, 25-17, 25-17.

The attendance was announced as 10,300 – the first sellout at the Stan Sheriff Center since 2011.

The Rainbow Wahine’s Kalei Adolpho, a Molokai High School graduate, had seven kills, five blocks and one dig. Ginger Long, a Kamehameha Maui graduate, had one kill.

Ali Longo had a match-high 11 digs for the Rainbow Wa-hine, ranked No. 9 in the AVCA coaches poll.

Hawaii (5-1) finished 3-0 in the tournament. No. 10 UCLA (5-1) went 2-1.

Kelly Reeves had eight kills and Mariana Aquino had five blocks for the Bruins.

In the earlier match, Santa Clara knocked off New Mexico State 25-22, 17-25, 25-16, 27-25.

On Friday, Rainbow Wa-hine coach Dave Shoji became the all-time winningest Division I?volleyball coach with win No. 1,107 – a four-set victory over San Clara.

Hawaii returns to action for the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Volleyball Challenge, Thursday through Sept. 14. Northwestern, Portland State, and Arizona will be a part of the tournament.
