Pair of aces recorded at Elleair

Holes-in-one were recorded at Elleair Maui Golf Club in Kihei on Sept. 7 and Sept. 15.

The first ace was by Kurt Nielsen of Kihei – he used a 7-iron on the 163-yard 12th hole. The shot was witnessed by Troy and Javin Nielsen.

The second hole-in-one was by Cori Seki of Pukalani, with a pitching wedge on the 116-yard third hole. The shot was witnessed by Jonny Sokalski, Deashawn Cook and Khanhaha Vanhtha.


Kiffmann athletes win nine gold medals

Team Kiffmann won 14 medals, including nine golds, at Sunday’s Hawaiian Islands Taekwondo Championship in Waipahu, Oahu.

In the black-belt division, Alex Macaraeg won gold in sparring and forms, T.J. Papagayo took gold in forms and silver in sparring, Camryn Henry won sparring gold and Jericho San Agustin took silver in forms and bronze in sparring.

Reynaldo Segundo won red-belt sparring and forms golds, and Deven Bio won gold in sparring. Blue-belt competitors Kaiya and Kayla Baisa each took gold in sparring and bronze in forms.


Austin, Chang to be part of tennis camp

The Wailea Fantasy Camp is scheduled for Nov. 20-24 at Wailea Tennis Club.

Instruction will be offered by former major champions Tracy Austin and Michael Chang; Corina Morariu, a former No. 1-ranked doubles player; former U.S. Davis Cup captain Tom Gullikson; 16-time ATP singles winner Jose Higueras; four-time ATP singles winner Taylor Dent; and U.S. Tennis Association coach Troy Hahn.

The fee is $2,295 without accommodations. With accommodations, the fee is $3,095 for double occupancy, and $3,595 for single occupancy.

An exhibition match is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 23, and admission will cost $10.

De Zwart wins stage at stand-up paddle event

Bart de Zwart of Haiku won Friday’s third stage of the SUP 11-City Tour in the Netherlands, and remained second overall in the five-leg stand-up paddling event.

The three-time defending champion covered the 26.6 miles from Workum to Franeker in 4 hours, 45 minutes, 40 seconds, gaining 10 seconds on overall leader Peter Bartl of Austria. De Zwart’s total time of 15:01:44.3 left him just under three minutes behind Bartl.

Today’s fourth stage, from Franeker to Dokkum, will cover approximately 27.9 miles.


Wailuku Junior Tennis event set for Sept. 22

The Wailuku Junior Tennis Club Play Day is scheduled for 3 to 5 p.m. on Sept. 22 at the Wells Park courts in Wailuku.

The USTA-sponsored event is free and open to the public, and will offer shorter courts with smaller racquets and slower, lower-bouncing balls for youth play.

Basketball, softball leagues being formed

The South Maui District of the Department of Parks and Recreation is accepting registration for three programs – basketball for youths ages

5-14, a 50-and-over softball league and coed softball.

The basketball program runs from November to March, with games starting in January at Kalama Park or Kamalii Elementary School in Kihei.

Both softball leagues will run from September to December, with games played Sunday nights at South Maui Community Park in Kihei.

Cortez earns conference honor

St. Anthony High School graduate Thomas Cortez, a sophomore kicker at Valley City State (N.D.), was named the North Star Athletic Association special teams player of the week after his performance in the Vikings’ 31-14 victory over Jamestown (N.D.) on Saturday.

Cortez was 4-for-4 on extra points, kicked a 25-yard field goal and averaged 41.3 yards on six kickoffs.


King Kekaulike seeking coaches

King Kekaulike High School is seeking coaches for cheerleading and girls basketball.

Applications are available at the school’s main office in Pukalani, and must be turned in by 4 p.m. on Sept. 13.


HYSA coaches meeting slated for Sept. 15

Hawaii Youth Soccer Association Maui will conduct a mandatory meeting for all coaches for under-8 to under-19 boys and girls teams from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sept. 15 at the cafeteria at Maui High School in Kahului.

New teams’ representatives can also participate.

Player registrations and season duration will be among the issues discussed.

Lester Hamai tourney scheduled for Oct. 12

The 40th annual Lester Hamai Memorial golf tournament is scheduled for Oct. 12 at Maui Country Club in Spreckelsville, with a 7 a.m. shotgun start.

The event is open to all members of Maui women’s golf clubs with an established maximum Oct. 1 GHIN handicap of 36 or better.

The entry fee of $80 also pays for use of a cart, an awards luncheon and eligibility for hole-in-one and closest-to-the-pin contests. Entry forms are available at most Maui courses.

The event will benefit the Boy Scouts of America Maui County Council.
