Lenny reaches fourth round of season-ending SUP event
Stand Up World Tour points leader Kai Lenny of Spreckelsville reached the fourth round of the season-ending La Torche Pro on Wednesday in Brittney, France, as did the only competitor who can surpass the two-time series champion in this year’s standings, Brazil’s Caio Vaz.
The two other Maui competitors in the field, Zane Schweitzer of Lahaina and Kody Kerbox of Haiku, advanced to a fourth-round heat in which they will be grouped together.
Lenny, who will be assured of the world title with a finish of third or better, received a bye to the second round and then won his heat to advance directly to the fourth round.
Vaz began his day with a third-place finish in the second round, then won his third-round heat.
Lenny, whose year already includes a Stand Up World Series racing championship – his second – and a victory in the Rainbow Sandals Battle of the Paddle elite-division race, will face Brazil’s Matt-heus Salazar and Florida’s Giorgio Gomez in the fourth round.
Kerbox, who is third in the series rankings, placed third in his second-round heat Tuesday, then won his third-round heat. Schweitzer, who is seventh in the points race, won his second-round heat with a score of 14.33, tied for the best score of the day with Florida’s Sean Poynter.
Kerbox and Schweitzer will be grouped with Oahu’s Noa Ginella in the fourth round.
