Maui surfers record three best wave scores at HIC Pro
Maui surfers recorded the three best wave scores Tuesday as competition got underway at the North Shore’s Sunset Beach in the HIC Pro, a qualifier for the Triple Crown of Surfing.
Competing in the round of 128, Ian Walsh of Haiku had the day’s top heat score, an 18.40 that included a 9.73 wave which topped the field. His 8.67 wave in the same heat ranked third – Imaikalani DeVault of Kula posted an 8.83 in the trials final.
Walsh won his heat and earned a bye to the round of 96. DeVault finished second in his opening-round heat, and moved into the round of 128.
Lahaina’s Kevin Sullivan finished second in the round of 128 to reach the third round, where he will be in a heat with Hana’s Hank Gaskell, who received a bye to the final 96.
Hana’s Dege O’Connell was eliminated with a third-place finish in the round of 128.
Billy Kemper of Kuau had not taken part in the round of 128 before competition was called off for the day.
Walsh and Kai Barger of Haiku, and Ian Gentil of Paia, received byes to the third round. Lahaina’s Dusty Payne, Hana’s Olamana Eleogram and Haiku’s Tanner Hendrickson received byes to the round of 64.
