Seabury Hall claims spot in state tourney
The Seabury Hall girls volleyball team clinched the Maui Interscholastic League Division II regular-season championship, and a ninth straight trip to the state tournament, with a 25-5, 25-17, 25-17 victory over Molokai on Friday at Erdman Athletic Center in Olinda.
“We had a quick start, and we had a couple of seniors (Taryn Shaw and Alyssa Bettendorf) get the start, and they were a big part of things,” said Spartans coach Scottie Zucco, whose team improved to 9-0.
“We were trying to get as many people into the game – at the end of the day, sports are supposed to be fun,” Zucco said.
Kiki Leuteneker had seven kills and an ace for Seabury, and Shaw also had seven kills. Bettendorf had five kills, and Gabby Ratte had 15 assists and five aces.
Molokai (6-3) must win today against Maui Prep, and have Hana lose to Seabury, to have a chance at second place. The regular-season champion and runner-up will each receive a bye in the MIL D-II tournament, which starts Wednesday.
“It just wasn’t our day,” said Farmers coach Mahealani Rawlins, who noted that the team was missing senior hitter Taylor Kaliihoomalu, who was on a trip with her family.
“We just need to work together more,” Rawlins said. “We need to just believe in each other, believe in the team.”
The Spartans were last year’s state D-II runners-up. This year’s tournament begins Oct. 29.
“We have talked about the state tournament throughout the year,” Zucco said. “The way we choose to talk about it is making sure we’ve practiced the entire year so we’re ready for the state tournament.”
