Bears receive No. 4 seed

The Baldwin High School football team received the No. 4 seed in the First Hawaiian Bank Division I State Championship bracket released Saturday, and will face Farrington at 6 p.m. Friday at War Memorial Stadium in Wailuku in a quarterfinal-round game.

The Bears (6-4, 6-2 Maui Interscholastic League) are in the state tournament for the 11th time in 12 seasons.

Farrington is 8-3 after losing to Mililani in Friday’s Oahu Interscholastic Association championship game.

The Bears or Governors will face top-seeded Punahou, the state runner-up to Kahuku each of the last two years, on Nov. 15 at Aloha Stadium on Oahu. The state final is scheduled for Nov. 23 at Aloha Stadium.

In the other quarterfinal, third-seeded Hilo will meet Campbell – which beat Kahuku on Saturday to claim the OIA’s final state berth – for the right to face No. 2 Mililani.

Baldwin lost to Mililani in the first round of last year’s state tournament.

The Bears’ Dusty Flores was the MIL’s second-leading rusher this year, gaining 795 yards and scoring five touchdowns. Jeremiah Badillo passed for 856 yards and 11 touchdowns, both second in the league, with six interceptions. Baldwin ranked second in the MIL in offense and defense.

The Governors’ Montana Liana has passed for over 1,000 yards this season, according to statistics complied by, and Sanele Lavatai has run for 13 touchdowns.
