Five Mauians still in field at Hawaiian Pro

Five surfers from Maui remained in the Reef Hawaiian Pro after the completion of the second round of the Triple Crown of Surfing opener Friday at Alii Beach Park in Haleiwa, Oahu.

Kuau’s Billy Kemper won his heat with the day’s fourth-best score, a 17.00. Kemper was coming off an elimination in the round of 128 at the HIC Pro.

“It’s a big winter and I was kind of nervous after my shocker at Sunset in the four-star and coming into this event,” he said.

Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau invitee Ian Walsh of Haiku also won his heat, and will be grouped with Lahaina’s Dusty Payne in a round-of-64 heat.

Haiku’s Kai Barger advanced with a runner-up finish, while Ian Gentil of Paia was eliminated by placing third in Kemper’s heat.

Payne, an Association of Surfing Professionals world tour member, received a bye to the round of 64, as did Lahaina’s Granger Larsen.

Ramzi Boukhiam of Morocco scored a perfect 10 wave in winning his heat.
