Lunas seeded No. 1 in state football tournament
The undefeated Lahainaluna High School football team received the No. 1 seed in the First Hawaiian Bank Division II State Championship bracket released Friday, getting a bye to a semifinal game on Nov. 16 at War Memorial Stadium in Wailuku against No. 4 Kaiser or Konawaena – those teams will meet in the quarterfinals on Nov. 9.
The Lunas (10-0, 8-0 Maui Interscholastic League), last year’s state runners-up, will play their semifinal game at 6 p.m. The state championship is scheduled for Nov. 23 at Aloha Stadium on Oahu.
Six-time defending champion Iolani was seeded No. 2 and will play a semifinal game against No. 3 Kauai or Pearl City.
Lahainaluna is making its seventh consecutive trip to the state tournament.
In MIL play this season, the Lunas averaged 399.6 yards of offense per game while allowing 130.4, both best in the league, and outscored opponents 336-44.
Lahainaluna had three of the league’s top four rushers – including the leader, Jared Rocha-
Islas, who ran for 814 yards on just 64 carries and scored 12 touchdowns. Makoa Filikitonga ran for 789 yards and eight scores, and Christian Whitehead rushed for 553 yards and nine touchdowns.
Filikitonga also passed for 443 yards and five touchdowns with three interceptions.
