Maui golfers help Hawaii win Asia Pacific Junior Cup
Wailuku’s Ariel Elftman-Hanson, Justin Ngan and Tyler Munetake won singles matches Tuesday as Hawaii beat Japan 18-14 in the Asia Pacific Junior Cup at the Waikoloa Beach Resort Kings’ Course on the Big Island.
In the first of Tuesday’s 16 singles matches, Elftman-Hanson recorded a hole-in-one on the 11th hole of his 3-and-1 win over Daichi Higashi. The ace gave Elftman-Hanson a one-point lead and he went on to win two of the next three holes – the other was halved – to gain separation.
Munetake won the final two holes to defeat Yuta Ito 1-up.
Ngan beat Hono Oshima 4 and 3. The match was all square through five holes before Ngan won four of the next eight with the other four being halved.
Kahului’s Kimberlie Miyamoto fell to Akiho Nishihata 4 and 3.
Hawaii won eight matches Tuesday, Japan took six and two were halved.
Ngan and Munetake each scored two points for Hawaii, while Elftman-Hanson contributed one during the three-day competition.
The format for the first two days was fourball.
