Shimomura wins Dennis Rose Intercollegiate
University of Hawaii at Hilo senior Chris Shimomura, a Lahainaluna High School graduate, earned his first college golf victory on Tuesday, winning the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate at the Waikoloa Beach Kings’ Course to help the Vulcans claim the team championship for the third consecutive time.
Shimomura closed with an even-par 72 and finished with a three-round total of 7-under 209 for a two-shot win over teammate Corey Kozuma (73).
Hilo had an 11-over 297 as a team in the final round and finished with a 4-under total of 860. Cal State Stanislaus (307) was second with an 885.
The Vulcans’ Kyeton Littel, a Kamehameha Maui graduate, tied for 13th at 223 after a final-round 76.
In the women’s event, Hilo’s Dayna Bersamin, a Baldwin graduate, carded a 77 in the third round for a 232 total that left her in ninth place. Nova Southeastern’s Daniela Ortiz (77) won with a 221.
