Gentil, Eleogram bow out in quarterfinals
Ian Gentil of Paia and Olamana Eleogram of Hana reached the quarterfinal round of the Vans World Cup on Sunday before bowing out with third-place finishes, while Oahu’s Ezekiel Lau won the second event of the Triple Crown.
Two surfers from Maui were eliminated in the fourth round at Sunset Beach on Oahu’s North Shore – Ian Walsh of Haiku and Hank Gaskell of Hana.
Eleogram had the second-best score in the round of 32, winning his heat with a 16.34. Gentil won his heat with a 13.17.
Eleogram and Gentil both finished less than a point away from reaching the semifinals.
Eleogram posted a 14.57 in his quarterfinal heat. Australia’s Taj Burrow won with a 16.70, and Lau was second with a 15.46.
Gentil’s quarterfinal score was 12.83. Puerto Rico’s Frederico Morais won with a 15.20, and Oahu’s John John Florence, the 2011 Triple Crown champion, was second with a 13.76.
The holding period for the final Triple Crown event, the Billabong Pipe Masters, beings Dec. 8.
