Hawaii finishes in three-way tie for Big West title
The University of Hawaii women’s volleyball team claimed a spot among a three-way tie for the Big West championship – but not an automatic NCAA tournament berth – with a 25-19, 25-18, 27-25 victory over Cal State Fullerton on Saturday in Fullerton, Calif.
The Rainbow Wahine ended their regular season with a 24-4 mark, including 13-3 in the Big West. UC Santa Barbara and Cal State Northridge also went 13-3 in conference play, and UCSB earned the automatic NCAA spot based on the Big West’s tiebreaker – the Gauchos went 3-1 against the other two top teams, while UH and Northridge each went 2-2.
The Rainbow Wahine, No. 12 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll, are likely to receive an at-large NCAA bid when the brackets are announced today.
Emily Hartong had 16 kills for UH on Saturday, Nikki Taylor added 13 and Molokai High School graduate Kalei Adolpho had eight, with a 1.000 hitting percentage.
Bre Moreland had 11 kills for the Titans (11-17, 4-12).
Hawaii has won at least a share of a conference title for 19 straight years.
