Hawaii to play Idaho State in opening round

The University of Hawaii women’s volleyball team received the No. 11 seed in the NCAA tournament bracket announced Sunday, and will face Idaho State in a first-round match at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu on Thursday.

The Rainbow Wahine (26-4) ranked 12th in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll, were part of a three-way tie for this year’s Big West championship, giving the team a 19th straight season of at least sharing a conference title.

Idaho State (23-11) won this year’s Big Sky crown.

The winner of the match between the Bengals and Rainbow Wahine will play on Saturday against the winner of Thursday’s first match at the Stan Sheriff Center, between Arizona State and 22nd-ranked Brigham Young.

Hawaii has won three national titles, in 1982, ’83 and ’87.

Defending champion Texas received the No. 1 seed.
