Payne fails to advance at Pipe Masters
Dusty Payne of Lahaina was eliminated by Australia’s Joel Parkinson on Tuesday in the third round of the Billabong Pipe Masters on Oahu’s North Shore.
Parkinson had a two-wave total of 13.56, while Payne scored a 7.33 in the finale of both the Triple Crown of Surfing and the Association of Surfing Professionals season.
Parkinson is the reigning ASP world champion and defending Pipe Masters champion.
Payne is trying to keep his spot on the ASP world tour.
Top-ranked Mick Fanning, a two-time ASP world champion, was eliminated in the fourth round, while 11-time champion Kelly Slater advanced to the fifth.
Lahaina’s Granger Larsen was eliminated in the second round and Olamana Eleogram of Hana did not get past the first round.
