Quartet of Maui surfers among World Cup’s final 32

Hank Gaskell and Olamana Eleogram of Hana, Ian Walsh of Haiku and Ian Gentil of Paia advanced to the final 32 surfers in the Vans World Cup with second-place finishes in their heats Saturday at Sunset Beach on Oahu’s North Shore.

Lahaina’s Dusty Payne, a member of the Association of Surfing Professionals world tour, and Granger Larsen were eliminated from the second event of the Triple Crown.

Gentil and Gaskell will be grouped together in the first heat of the fourth round, with Australia’s Jay Thompson and Adam Melling, last year’s World Cup winner.

Walsh is in the second heat, along with Kauai’s Sebastian Zietz, the reigning Triple Crown champion, Oahu’s Makuakai Rothman and Costa Rica’s Carlos Munoz.

Eleogram is in the round’s final heat, along with Oahu’s Fredrick Patacchia, the runner up at the opening Triple Crown event, the Reef Hawaiian Pro, Joel Centeio, also of Oahu, and California’s Tim Reyes.
