Walk for the Whales scheduled for Feb. 1

The Pacific Whale Foundation’s Run and Walk for the Whales is scheduled for Feb. 1, starting and ending at the Maalaea Harbor Shops.

The half-marathon will begin at 6:15 a.m., the 10-kilometer run at 6:45 a.m., the 5K at 7 a.m. and the 2.5-mile walk at 7:05 a.m.

The entry fees are $45 before Jan. 1, $55 from Jan. 1 to Jan. 29 and $70 on Jan. 30 or Feb. 1 for the half-marathon; $40 before Jan. 1, $45 from Jan. 1 to Jan. 29 and $55 on Jan. 30 or Feb. 1 for the 10K; $35 before Jan. 1, $40 from Jan. 1 to Jan. 29 and $50 on Jan. 30 or Feb. 1 for the 5K; and $20 before Jan. 1, $25 from Jan. 1 to Jan. 29 and $30 on Jan. 30 or Feb. 1 for the walk.

Each participant will receive a T-shirt. Medals and a pair of whalewatch tickets will be awarded to each of the top three male and top three female overall finishers in the half-marathon, 10K and 5K.

The foundation will offer a youth camp, for children from 4 to 12 years old, from 6 to 10 a.m. on race day. The cost is $35 per child, and registration is required in advance.

DeCoite aces No. 3 at Pukalani Country Club

Makawao’s Henry DeCoite recorded a hole-in-one on the third hole at Pukalani Country Club on Dec. 6.

He used a 7-iron for the 137-yard shot, which was witnessed by Dan Beam.


Cole gets hole-in-one at Maui Country Club

Stephen Cole of Spreckles-ville’s recorded a hole-in-one on the 16th hole at Maui Country Club on Dec. 8.

He used a 9-iron for the 105-yard shot, which was witnessed by Ed Hanna, Steve Hargrove, Chris Werner, Paul MacLaughlin, and Raymond Hew.

It was Cole’s second career hole-in-one.

Cortez on conference first team as kicker

Valley City State (N.D.) junior kicker Thomas Cortez was named to this year’s North Star Athletic Association first team.

Cortez, a St. Anthony High School alumnus, was 4-for-9 on field-goal attempts this season, with a long of 30 yards, and made 34 of 38 extra points.


Michimoto named head pro at Kapalua Bay

Ryan Michimoto has been named the head golf professional for the Kapalua Bay Course.

Michimoto, a 2001 graduate of Lahainaluna High School, had been the tournament coordinator at Whirlwind Golf Club in Arizona.

“To be able to return to home with my family into the open arms of my extended family is a dream come true,” said Michimoto, who caddied at Kapalua as a youth.


Lahainaluna football to have kalua pig sale

Friends of Lahainaluna Football will conduct a kalua pig sale on Dec. 14.

Pick-up is scheduled for 8 to 11 a.m. at Hoaloha Park in Kahului.

Pair of VIRR events scheduled for Dec. 14

Valley Isle Road Runners’ Christmas 10K and Vineyard Street Mile are scheduled for 7:30 a.m. on Dec. 14.

Both races will start and end at the Wailuku municipal parking lot, and will be followed by a potluck.

The event will have no entry fee for VIRR members. Canned goods and monetary donations for the Maui Food Bank will be accepted.

VIRR membership or race registration can be completed at Race number pick-up will be on the day of the race from 6:30 to 7:20 a.m.

Decosta earns GNAC honorable mention

Saint Martin’s senior setter Cymbree Decosta, a Ka-mehameha Schools Maui graduate, received Great Northwest Athletic Conference women’s volleyball honorable mention on Nov. 25.

Decosta averaged 8.16 assists and 2.48 digs per set this season. Her 2,536 career assists rank second in school history.


Two youth basketball clinics scheduled

BasketballMaui will conduct free ball-control and shooting clinics on Dec. 21 at the Lahaina Civic Center and Jan. 4 at Kalama Park in Kihei.

Instruction is scheduled for 8-9:45 a.m. for ages 5-8 and 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. for ages 9-13 at both clinics .

Players should bring a ball, signed parental release and canned food items to donate to the Maui Food Bank.
