Challenger starts main draw today
Malek Jaziri earned a spot in the main draw of the Royal Lahaina Challenger with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Kento Takeuchi in a qualifier final Monday at the Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch.
Three qualifying finals are scheduled for today – Jarmere Jenkins is to face Daniel Kosakowski, Jared Donaldson will play Cesar Ramirez and Chieh-Fu Wang will meet Jaume Martinez Vich. Those matches will be followed by the start of play in the main draw of the event, which has a purse of $50,000.
Jenkins beat Rong Ma on Monday, Kosakowski defeated Alexios Halebian, Donaldson got past Nicolas Meister, Ramirez beat Andrew Carter, Wang topped Dean O’Brien and Martinez Vich defeated Tyler Hochwalt. Wang and Martinez Vich needed three sets for their second-round wins.
The top-seeded player in the main draw is Tim Smyczek, No. 90 in the ATP rankings. Yen-hsun Lu, ranked 53rd, is not playing after reaching the second round of this year’s Australian Open, and No. 89 Alex Bogomolov Jr. has withdrawn because of a biceps injury.
The top-seeded doubles team is Austin Krajicek and Tennys Sandgren. Krajicek is ranked 89th in doubles, and Sandgren 115th.
