Kim, Cyr in hunt for Sony Open spots

Two golfers from Maui – Sam Cyr and Taeksoo Kim – were among the 41 players who advanced through Sunday’s prequalifier for the Sony Open on Oahu.

Kim, a St. Anthony High School graduate, shot a 69 to tie for sixth at Turtle Bay’s Arnold Palmer Course. Cyr, a King Kekaulike graduate, carded a 70 to tie for 10th. The top 41 players advanced to today’s final qualifier at the Palmer Course, at which four spots in the PGA Tour event will be on the line.

The Sony begins Thursday at Waialae Country Club.

Also advancing to today’s competition was Tadd Fujikawa, a Moanalua graduate who tied for 20th in the Sony in 2007 as a 16-year-old. Fujikawa matched Cyr at 70 on Sunday.

Jeffrey Hamm and Cory Renfrew tied for the top after each shot 66.
