Nine from Maui remain after Pipe Pro’s first day

Dege O’Connell of Hana posted Thursday’s third-highest heat score in the Volcom Pipe Pro as competition got underway in the Association of Surfing Professionals five-star event on Oahu’s North Shore.

O’Connell won his opening heat, then advanced to the final 64 with a second-round score of 13.50.

Billy Kemper of Kuau won his first-round heat, and finished second in second-round heat.

Ian Gentil of Paia finished second in his second-round heat after receiving a bye.

Tanner Hendrickson and Kai Barger, both of of Haiku, received byes into second round, and are grouped together in the same heat. Haiku’s Ian Walsh and Hana’s Hank Gaskell received byes into the second round as well.

Dusty Payne of Lahaina and Olamana Eleogram of Hana received byes into the round of 64. Eleogram is grouped with O’Connell in the round’s opening heat.

Imaikalani Devault of Kula and Kevin Sullivan of Lahaina were eliminated in the first round.

The contest’s top eight finishers from Hawaii will earn spots in December’s Pipe Masters, the final event of the Triple Crown.
