Seabury Hall clinches girls title
Seabury Hall clinched the Maui Interscholastic League girls canoe paddling championship with a victory in the fourth regatta of the season Saturday at Ka Lae Pohaku in Kihei, while the Spartans mixed crew and Baldwin boys moved a win away from undefeated seasons.
The Seabury girls earned their third victory of the year, with the crew of Ashley Tanga, Kamaile Lee, Alexis Smith, Mikaela McDaniel, Mikela Wesson and Mapuana Andrade finishing in 4 minutes, 18.74 seconds. Molokai, the only other MIL girls crew with a win this season, placed second on Saturday in 4:21.82.
Lee, Tanga and McDaniel joined Adam Ferrier, Andrew Gibbons and Mogul Lu’uwai on the mixed crew, which won in 4:05.68. Kamehameha Maui earned its fourth second-place finish of the season, in 4:09.58.
The Baldwin boys crew of Kellen Bean, Palekana Pamat Hett, Matthew Vanni, Tyson Felicilda, Noah Katz and Kyle Knutson won in 3:37.91. The Seabury boys were second for the fourth time, in 3:41.43.
The MIL season is to conclude next Saturday at Hanakao’o (Canoe) Beach Park in Lahaina, and the state regatta is scheduled for Feb. 1 at Keehi Lagoon on Oahu.
