Texeira on Puerto Rico’s team in Caribbean Series

Kanekoa Texeira of Kula is part of Puerto Rico’s Indios de Mayaguez team that will play in the Caribbean Series, beginning Saturday in Margarita Island, Venezuela.

Texeira, who has played for the Kansas City Royals and Seattle Mariners in the major leagues, had a 0.69 ERA in 14 appearances, including one start, for Mayaguez during the Roberto Clemente League season. He did not have a decision. Texeira made three relief appearances in the championship series against Criollos de Caguas, allowing one run in three innings.

Texeira pitched for the Cincinnati Reds’ Triple-A team, the Louisville Bats, in 2013, posting a 2.42 ERA with no decisions in 16 appearances, two of them starts.

The Caribbean Series is for the champions of winter leagues in Puerto Rico, Cuba, Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela. Mayaguez will face the Dominican Republic team, Tigres del Licey, in the series opener.

Semifinal games are scheduled for Thursday, and the championship is on Feb. 8.

Texeira had a 1-1 record and 4.66 ERA over 49 major league appearances with Seattle and Kansas City in the 2010 and 2011 seasons.
