BYU-Hawaii, HPU volleyball teams to meet at King Kekaulike

The Brigham Young University-Hawaii and Hawaii Pacific women’s volleyball teams will play an exhibition match at the King Kekaulike gym in Pukalani on March 15, Na Alii girls coach Al Paschoal announced Saturday.

The match will start at 5 p.m., and gates will open at 4. Tickets in advance are $5 per person and are available at Tickets at the door will be $7.

Paschoal said the fundraiser for Hawaiian Style Volleyball Club came about with the help of Sea Warriors coach Daryl Kapis and Seasiders coach Mona Ah Hoy, whose team was the NCAA Division II runner-up last year.

“I worked with Daryl a little bit through USA Volleyball and we got to talking and he said he was totally excited to do something like this,” Paschoal said. “It fit into both of their schedules, so it’s ideal, bringing top-notch collegiate volleyball to Maui.”

In 24 years of coaching in the Maui Interscholastic League – at Maui High, Kamehameha Maui, St. Anthony and King Kekaulike – Paschoal has sent 34 girls to college programs.

“There are so many different levels for the kids to play. D-II is a solid level and to know that we have two of the best teams in the country here in Hawaii, I mean, why not?

“You bring fantastic ball to the island and just open everybody’s eyes to that level. Sometimes they think D-II is a lower level, but not when they seem them on the court.”
