Lahainaluna in quarterfinals; Baldwin to take on Maryknoll
Ryan Madera scored 16 points and two Lahainaluna High School teammates also finished in double figures in a 57-27 win over Kalaheo on Wednesday in a Hawaiian Airlines Boys Basketball Division I State Championship game at the McKinley gym on Oahu.
Cyrus Kama had 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Lunas (9-6), who will play top-seeded Iolani today in the quarterfinal round. Calvin Chapital made both of his 3-point attempts on the way to scoring 13 points, and Peni Taufa had seven points and 14 rebounds.
Baldwin, the No. 3 seed, will play a quarterfinal game today at Radford against Maryknoll, which beat Moanalua 59-54 on Wednesday.
In the eight-team Division II tournament, third-seeded Seabury Hall will face Damien today at Kaimuki.
Lahainaluna outrebounded Kalaheo 44-13 – the Lunas had 22 offensive rebounds.
The Maui Interscholastic League runners-up led 10-8 after one quarter, then opened the second period on a 13-2 run.
Lahainaluna led by at least 13 the rest of the way.
Kekai Smith and Alexander MacLeod each had nine points for the Mustangs (11-5), who won last year’s state championship. Only three other players scored for Kalaheo, none with more than four points.
