Lunas reach final
The Lahainaluna High School girls basketball team is a win away from adding to its place in history.
The Lunas defeated Hilo 57-47 on Friday at the McKinley Gym on Oahu in the semifinals of the Hawaiian Airlines Division I State Championship, and will play for the title today against Punahou at the Neal Blaisdell Center.
“It feels good. It was our goal today to get to that state championship,” said the Lunas’ Loke Basques, the team’s lone senior, who scored 17 points.
Top-seeded Lahainaluna (16-0) trailed 17-11 after one quarter, but led 27-25 at the half, and was in front the rest of the way.
“Our girls, they showed true character today,” said Lunas coach Todd Rickard. “They started out a little sluggish, a little slow, but we know we just have to hang in there.”
Lahainaluna is the only Maui Interscholastic League team to have won a Division I girls basketball state crown, taking the title in 2010.
Folau Hafoka had 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Lunas on Friday. Fiemea Hafoka had six points, 12 rebounds and five assists.
Sharlei Graham-Bernisto scored 16 points for the Vikings (13-3).
Lahainaluna widened its lead to as many as 12 points in the third quarter – Hilo committed turnovers on its first five possessions of the period.
“The first quarter, it’s hard to get turnovers because everybody is still fresh,” Rickard said. “Third, fourth quarter, that’s when you start to get tired. We started to get some pressure.”
Punahou, the No. 3 seed, advanced with a 53-48 win over Mililani in the day’s second semifinal game.
Lahainaluna beat Punahou 51-50 in November on Oahu.
