Rainbow Wahine come up short on road
The University of Hawaii women’s basketball team staged a second-half rally that came up short in a 62-60 loss to Cal Poly on Saturday in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
The Rainbow Wahine were behind 53-42 with less than eight minutes left but got within one point with a 15-5 run capped by Kamilah Jackson’s layup with 47 seconds left.
Ariana Elegado put the Mustangs (14-8, 8-1 Big West) in front 60-57 on a jump shot with 19 seconds remaining, and after Hawaii’s Pua Kailiawa missed a 3-point attempt, Elegado sank two free throws with four seconds left. Destiny King hit a 3-pointer for UH as time ran out.
Jackson and Shawna-Lei Kuehu each scored 14 points, and King had 11 for the Rainbow Wahine (11-10, 5-4 Big West). Kalei Adolpho, a Molokai High School alumnus, didn’t record any statistics in seven minutes of play.
Elegado scored 25 points and Molly Schlemer added 20 for Cal Poly.
Hawaii will play at home against UC Riverside on Thursday.
