Two teams from Maui claim tennis titles
Maui teams won titles in the 3.5 and 4.0 women’s divisions at the USTA Hawaii Pacific Tri-Level League Section Championships that concluded Sunday at the Holua Tennis Center in Kailua-Kona.
The 4.0 team of Janet King and Keiko Ichimaru beat East Hawaii’s Pat Jamesson and Margaret Hind 6-1, 6-3 on Sunday, after a pair of wins Saturday – 6-3, 6-1 over West Hawaii’s Michelle Smith and Valerie Corcoran, and 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 over Charlene Matsuno and Laurie Kishimoto of Oahu.
Susan Gianlorenzo and Lana Coryell won four matches to claim the 3.5 title. On Sunday, Gianlorenzo and Coryell beat Ipolani Wright and Elaine Reed of East Hawaii 6-2, 6-1, and won 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 over Peggy Spencer and Raedel Garman of West Hawaii. On Saturday, the Maui duo beat Kathy Kaneshige and Tiffany Akiyama of Oahu 6-4, 1-6, 1-0, and defeated Michelle Fitzgerald and Nikki Matsumura from Kauai 6-3, 6-3.
The sectional title winners in both divisions qualify for the BNP Paribas Open Tri-Level Championships, which are to take place March 15-16 in conjunction with the final weekend of the ATP and WTA tours’ BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif.
