UH squanders two-run lead in ninth, loses in 10
The University of Hawaii baseball team allowed Oregon to score two runs in the top of the ninth inning to tie the game, and committed two errors in the 10th that permitted another run to come home in a 6-5 loss on Sunday at Les Murakami Stadium in Honolulu.
In the 10th, the Rainbow Warriors’ Jordan DePonte hit leadoff batter Aaron Payne with a pitch before walking Tyler Baumgartner and committing a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt by Mitchell Tolman. Kyle Garlick then popped out to catcher Trevor Podratz and Hawaii (0-3) recorded a force out at home plate on a ground ball, but shortstop Austin Wobrock’s throwing error prevented UH from getting out of the inning unscathed.
A.J. Balta hit an RBI double in the ninth and later scored the tying run for the Ducks (3-0).
DePonte (0-1) took the loss.
Wobrock finished 3-for-4 and scored a run.
Jake Reed (1-0) pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.
Oregon’s Mark Karaviotis, a Maui High School graduate, stole home in the third inning.
The Ducks won Saturday’s game 10-5.
The teams’ season-opening series ends today.
