Bears girls beat Sabers, forge tie atop standings

Kimberlie Miyamoto shot a 38 as the Baldwin High School girls golf team beat Maui High 119-126 in a Maui Interscho-lastic League match Tuesday at Waiehu Golf Course.

Kirsten Ishikawa recorded a 40 and Kaylee Shimizu had a 41 for the Bears, who tied the Sabers atop the standings. Both teams, who will meet again Thursday, are 7-2.

“It’s actually, ‘If we win we’re in it; if we lose, we’re out,’ ” Baldwin coach Kenny Houpo said. “Having us win today, it allows us to have a chance on Thursday.”

Baldwin’s Erin Kobayashi had a non-scoring 50. The Bears’ alternates were Lexi Nagamine (44), Alyssa Garcia (66) and Kailey Antiado (66).

“We’re happy that we won. No doubt about it,” Houpo said. “The girls are satisfied.”

Taylor Akamine shot a 38 for the Sabers, while Kristeena Locke had a 41 and Jasmine Cabajar recorded a 47. Anna Apana had a non-scoring 51. Maui High’s alternates were Dayna Yoshimura (51) and Courtney Cadiz (55).


At Pukalani Country Club, the Farmers won a pair of matches against Na Alii that were each shortened to seven holes because of time constraints.

Molokai won the first match 151-200.

Damien Garces shot a 33, Kanekawaiola Vendiola and William Dela Cruz each recorded a 39 and Cody Kawa-no had a 40 for the Farmers.

King Kekaulike’s Jordan Beesly shot a 45, Austin Ferreira recorded a 47, Michael Kleeman carded a 51 and Thomas Peterson had a 57.

Molokai won the second match 161-205.

Garces had a 37, Vendiola and Dela Cruz each shot a 39 and Kawano carded a 46.

Na Alii’s Ferreira had a 45, Beesly recorded a 51, Ian Manibog shot a 52 and Peterson posted a 57. Kleeman recorded a non-scoring 59.
